World Music Day, la Fête de la Musique in French, is a day of celebration of music that takes place every year on June 21, the first day of summer, as well as synonymous with the summer solstice. It’s a day when people around the world come together to celebrate music in all its forms. World Music Day was created in 1982 by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang and since then it has become a highly anticipated annual event in many cities around the world.

The World Music Day is important because it highlights local musical talent and promotes musical diversity. It also offers artists a platform to perform in front of a wider audience and to get their name out there. In addition, Fête de la Musique is a day when people can gather and celebrate music together, thus strengthening community bonds.
World Music Day events are varied and can include outdoor concerts, shows in parks, performances in bars and clubs, as well as events held in schools and community centers. The musical genres represented are also very diverse, ranging from rock, jazz, classical music, traditional music, reggae, hip-hop and much more.
During the music festival, each concert is free! It is a long evening rich in animation and gaiety. Enthusiasts find themselves easily in this great popular festival accessible to all. It is also a rare opportunity to discover small local groups or amateur musicians.

la francophonie (in 2006)
youth (in 2007)
pop is fifty years old (in 2012)
