Funicular railway of Lyon : an unique way to visit the city

The city of Lights, Lyon is known for its historic, cultural and architectural heritage. Among many attractions some are amazing as the funiculars. These are convenient to move in an original way. In this article, I will talk to you about the reasons why you should test them.

Origin and history

Lyon’s funiculars have a long story that goes back to the late 19 century. The first funicular railway was built in 1862, with the objective to link the lower town to the cathedral of Fourvière. It was a faster and efficient way to transport building materials for the basilica. However, people started to use these as means of transport. Then, they saw a real potential to develop funiculars for the general public.

Then with years, across the city various funiculars were born. Each has its own history and charm. Today, there are five funiculars in Lyon : Fourvière, Saint-Just, Croix-Rousse, Minimes and Presqu’île. Each funicular offers a beautiful view of the city and of course an unforgettable experience.

An extraordinary experience

The funiculars of Lyon give an experience that you won’t be able to find elsewhere. The funiculars are vehicles with 2 compartments that are related by a cable and the motion is controlled by electrical motors.

They are also unique because they were made to be adapted to the steep terrain of the city. Funiculars of Fournière and of Saint-Just are the most inclined, with a slope of more than 30%. Funiculars of Croix Rousse and of Minimes are the most soft. And the funicular of Presqu’île is almost horizontal.

Funiculars of Lyon is a must-see means of transport to explore the city. With its fascinating history you cannot miss them if you want to visit Lyon !
