JARDIN DE TUILERIES PARIS – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Located in the 1st arrondissement, the Jardin des Tuileries is one of the most popular green spaces in Paris. The park is located between the Louvre and the Champs Elysee, next to the River Seine, so it is easy to find. You can walk straight from the Louvre to this beautiful park, as well as from the Musée d’Orsay and Place de la Concorde. This magnificent is the ideal spot to sit down for a little bit of a breather. Enjoy the fountains, the free chairs and the people watching!

JARDIN DES TUILERIES HISTORY

Jardin des Tuileries is a park that brings together historical elements and modern art. In 1553, Catharina de Médici had the Italian-style gardens laid out with beautiful large fountains. From 1660 to 1664, the garden was redesigned in formal French style by André le Nôtre, the renowned architect of the sun-king, best known for his designs of the Versailles gardens. Le Nôtre built a terrace along the banks of the Seine and created a central axis that he would extend three years later with the construction of the Champs-Élysées.

Jardin des Tuileries was one of the first parks to be opened to the public. It quickly became a place to go people watching. Already in the 18th century there were facilities in the park such as cafés, kiosks, deck chairs and public toilets.

The Palais de Tuileries, located where now Arc du Carrousel stands, was razed to the ground in 1871 by the Communards, giving the inner courtyard of the Louvre an open view of the Arc de Triomphe.

JARDIN DES TUILERIES RENOVATION

The most recent renovation of the park dates from the 1990s, but the formal 17th century design of Le Nôtre was retained. They decided it was time to close the park off for cars and other non-essential traffic. Furthermore, many modern sculptures were placed in the park and in 1999 the Passerelle de Solférino (now the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor), a pedestrian bridge across the Seine, connected the Tuileries directly to the Musee d’Orsay.

The Tuileries are a Parisian favourite when it comes to parks. Not only are the Tuileries great for walks and picnics, the green lung in the city is also a great escape from the sometimes hectic streets of Paris. You will see many locals letting out their dogs, Enjoying the sun or even having fun in the park with their kids.

I have to say that my favourite Parisian park is Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. It is very big and has that very distinctive 19th century look about it. But when I am in the centre of the city and I need to have some me-time or I just got some cheese and a baguette to munch on, I would most definitely sit down in Jardin de Tuileries.

EVENTS IN JARDIN DES TUILERIES

As you might have guessed, there are also a number of events that are held in the park. Paris Fashion week is held in the park.  Many celebrities, models and fashion lovers will find their way to the gardens.

From June until August you will also be able to go to Fête des Tuileries. This is when Place de la Concorde and a part of the gardens is being used as a fairground. The whole of Paris, their kids and many tourists come out to have a go at the bumper cars, the old horse carousel or even get spooky in the haunted house. Definitely a must see when you are visiting Paris with kids.
