The Dune du Pilat is the highest dune in Europe, located at the southern entrance to the Arcachon Basin, around 60 km from Bordeaux. With its 100-metre height, 2.7 km length and exceptional panorama of the Atlantic Ocean, the Landes forest and the Banc d'Arguin, it attracts over two million visitors every year.
The dune shifts a few meters each year under the effect of the wind, modifying its relief and gradually engulfing the surrounding forest. It is freely accessible all year round, with a temporary staircase (from April to November) facilitating ascent. At the summit, you can admire the sunset, picnic or simply enjoy the view. Thrill-seekers can go paragliding or take a swim on the beach.
Access by car, train + shuttle or bike from Arcachon. The site offers paid parking, footpaths, sanitary facilities, a reception area and a number of educational activities. Very popular in fine weather, the dune is a must for a student getaway, a relaxing day out or a sports outing.
