Pey Berland Tower - Bordeaux (historic center)
Tour Pey Berland is the free-standing bell tower of Saint-André Cathedral, located on Place Pey-Berland in the heart of Bordeaux's historic center. Built between 1440 and 1500 on the initiative of the eponymous archbishop, it is a remarkable example of the flamboyant Gothic style. Its detached position from the cathedral prevented the vibrations of the bells from damaging the main religious building.
History, architecture and panorama
Standing 66 metres high, the tower houses several bells, including a monumental drone. Topped by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine, it offers two levels of terraces accessible after climbing 229 steps. The 360° panorama takes in the roofs of Bordeaux, the river, the cathedral and the city's main monuments. An ideal visit for lovers of architecture and history.
Student attendance and accessibility
The climb is a bit of a physical challenge, but attracts many students for the spectacular view of the city. The site applies a reduced rate for 18-25 year-olds. Please note that access is exclusively via a narrow spiral staircase, making the visit inaccessible to people with reduced mobility.
