Citadelle of Lille - Old Lille

Built by Vauban between 1667 and 1670 on the orders of Louis XIV, the Citadelle de Lille is a masterpiece of military architecture. Nicknamed the "Queen of Citadels", it adopts a perfectly symmetrical pentagonal shape, with five bastions and an advanced defense system using flooded ditches. Its excellent state of preservation makes it an emblematic part of Lille's heritage.

Park, tours and student atmosphere

Today, La Citadelle is part of a vast urban park that is popular with students, families, sports enthusiasts and walkers. It is also home to an accrobranche park, accessible to everyone from the age of 6. Guided tours take visitors inside the military site, which is usually closed to the public. The exterior, with its wooded walkways, moats and relaxation areas, is an ideal place to take a break, just a stone's throw from the town center.
