The Maison natale Charles de Gaulle is located at 9 rue Princesse, in the Vieux-Lille district. It was in this bourgeois residence that the future general and president was born in 1890. Transformed into a museum in 1983, it is listed as a historic monument and bears the "Maison des Illustres" label. It was completely renovated in 2020 to restore its late XIXᵉ century atmosphere.
The tour takes visitors through the various rooms of the house, reconstructed from family archives: the birthplace, the living room, the kitchen and the winter garden. It highlights the family environment, values and education received by Charles de Gaulle. An adjoining space, the "Fabrique d'histoire", now hosts temporary exhibitions, conferences, readings and workshops on memory and commitment.
The tour lasts about an hour, and can be taken independently or with a guide for a few extra euros. Paper guides are available, as well as a special tour for young people. The experience is particularly interesting for students of history, humanities or architecture. As the site is frequented by school groups, it is advisable to book in advance.
