Paris Catacombs: monumental ossuary and underground tour

The Catacombs of Paris form a site unique in the world: an ossuary several kilometers long set up in former quarries, 20 meters underground. Located in the 14ᵉ arrondissement, they house the remains of over six million Parisians transferred at the end of the XVIIIᵉ century for sanitary reasons.

  • Around 2 kilometers of galleries open to the public
  • Down 131 steps, up 112 steps
  • Constant temperature at 14 °C
  • Bones arranged in an orderly fashion: walls of skulls and tibias, inscriptions
  • Foucault's pendulum in some temporary exhibitions
  • Average length of visit: 45 min to 1 hour
  • Space not accessible to people with reduced mobility
