The former site of the famous prison stormed on July 14, 1789, a symbol of the Revolution, the Bastille was demolished between 1789 and 1790.
Today, the square is dominated by the Colonne de Juillet, erected between 1833 and 1840 to commemorate the 1830 Revolution. The site is a popular gathering place, hosting concerts, marches, fairs and food markets twice a week.
Bastille covers an area of 215 × 150 m, at the junction of three arrondissements. It is served by metros 1, 5 and 8 (Bastille station), numerous buses and a marina (Bassin de l'Arsenal) to the south.
