Hi, it's Rémi! I hope you're well.

When winter arrives and French cities light up, Christmas markets become a must. Between local traditions, fairy-tale decorations and gourmet specialties, these events offer a unique experience, especially for foreign students or young expats looking for cultural immersion. Here's my selection of the 10 most beautiful Christmas markets in France, with a few not-to-be-missed Erasmus Place escapades!

1. Strasbourg - The most emblematic

Established in 1570, Strasbourg' s Christkindelsmärik is considered the oldest Christmas market in France, and indeed in Europe. It stretches across several squares in the city center, notably around Notre-Dame Cathedral, with over 300 chalets. You'll find local crafts, bredele (Alsatian cookies), cinnamon mulled wine and a huge fir tree on Place Kléber. Strasbourg, nicknamed the "Capital of Christmas", blends German and French traditions in an ultra-warm atmosphere.

Good plan Erasmus Place: I offer weekends in Strasbourg during the Christmas market, with transport, accommodation and guided tour. Want to come?

2. Colmar - Alsatian charm at its best

Colmar is the picture postcard of Christmas. Illuminated half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and no fewer than six themed markets in the historic center: crafts, children's market, tastes and scents... The atmosphere is ultra-friendly. You can also enjoy mulled white wine, manalas or melted cheese.

With Erasmus Place, I'll take you on a day or weekend trip to Colmar, perfect for enjoying the magic of Alsace.

3. Reims - Champagne festivals and bubbles

At the foot of the Gothic cathedral, the Reims Christmas Market welcomes over 140 chalets. The atmosphere is chic but accessible, with plenty of Champagne specialities, craft workshops, a Ferris wheel and, of course, champagne tastings! The city also has a major historical role: it was here that the kings of France were crowned.

Erasmus Place organizes days in Reims with visits to champagne cellars and free time at the market.

4. Montbéliard - Comtois lights and traditions

Less well known, but truly authentic: the Montbéliard Christmas market is inspired by the German traditions of the Württemberg region. It features over 100 exhibitors, a festival of lights and, each year, a guest region from around the world. A warm, local atmosphere on a human scale.

5. Lyon - Between tradition and modern enlightenment

Lyon's Christmas market takes place on Place Carnot. It's all about artisanal and organic products. If you come around December 8, you can also experience the Fête des Lumières, when the city's monuments are transformed into veritable works of art.

6. Paris - Capital Christmas

Paris has several Christmas markets, but the Tuileries is the biggest. It combines a festive atmosphere, Ferris wheel, skating rink, gourmet chalets and entertainment. The Notre-Dame market is a more intimate affair, showcasing French artisans.

7. Annecy - Christmas by the lake

In a dreamy Alpine setting, Annecy offers a Christmas market spread between the Old Town and the shores of the lake. Tartiflette, reblochon and gingerbread are all on offer, and the pure mountain air is really good for you.

With Erasmus Place, I propose a day in Annecy to enjoy the illuminations and the Savoyard market in all its splendor.

8. Amiens - The biggest in the north

The Amiens Christmas market is huge, with 2 km of chalets in the city center. Every evening, the cathedral comes alive with a light show. You can sample local produce and enjoy the festive, family atmosphere.

9. Toulouse - Flavors of the Southwest

Place du Capitole, Toulouse offers a market with a gentle atmosphere and typical products: foie gras, South-West wines, aligot, and lots of local designers. Ideal if you're in the south of France.

10. Metz - Poetry from the East

The Metz Christmas market is a magnificent sight: lantern path, skating rink, Ferris wheel, gourmet huts and a soft, dreamy atmosphere. Five downtown squares are transformed into a veritable Christmas village.

Erasmus Place deal: come with me on a trip to Metz, with a guided tour and free time at the markets.
